Figures

Picture

Artist Statement

I focus on the figure using the outlet of ceramics. My work communicates a metaphorical and autobiographical narrative through the inspiration I find in everyday objects and antiques.  The sculptures will often convey an idea of duality, whether it be in the story they tell, the emotion, or their surfaces. I like to play with varying textures on my figures to create depth. As with my pottery, I want my figurative work to evoke a sense of nostalgia and help create the feeling of connection. On a portion of the figure, I will incorporate an underglaze image transfer that I’ve designed. This pattern, shape, or image helps further this connection and gives the audience yet another way to create their own narrative. Often, the figures project a disturbed and delusional personality, a supernatural form of being, delivered with a little dark humor. This juxtaposition of nostalgia and perversion is another form of a playful duality you can find throughout.
